Making Ear Wires With A Wire Jig
Supplies:

  • 20 gauge wire

  • Wire jig

  • Wire cutters (flush cutters)

  • Chasing hammer and bench block

Instructions:

  1. Place pegs on the block.

  2. Cut a length of wire about 4 inches.

  3. Make a partial loop at one end. This will be the loop end of the ear wire.

  4. Loop the wire over the peg on the jig as shown.

  5. Continue wrapping the wire around the large peg and only to the left side of the bottom peg. DO NOT wrap this peg but merely make a 15 degree angle as shown.

  6. Make the tail about 3/8 inch after the bend.

  7. After the end is cut use a small file to take the burrs away.

 Wire Book Marker
Supplies:

  • 16-14 gauge wire

  • round nose pliers

  • flat nose or chain nose pliers

  • beads

Instructions:

  1. Cut 12" of wire.

  2. Using round nose pliers, form a loop at one end.

  3. 1 1/2" from the loop, bend wire at a right angle.

  4. Then manipulate the wire in the shape you desire with flat nose or chain nose pliers.

  5. At the bottom end of the book marker, coil the wire up to prevent having an end exposed.

  6. On the loop at the top we will link wire links together to make the decorative beaded portion.

  7. You will make a wrapped loop on each end of your wire.

  8. Wrap one end, add beads, then add next wrapped loop on the other end.

  9. You will link these looped sections together.

  10. Once you have finished the first loop, start the second section.

  11. Wrap first end, add beads, then begin the next wrap.

  12. Before you close the loop, insert one end of the first segment then finish the wrap.

  13. Add charm then attach the entire beaded item to the wire marker.

Beadz Wax Supplies:

  • Beadz wax

  • Double boiler

  • Item you wish to cover

  • Beads

Instructions:

This wax is actually a specially processed bees wax and oine resin mixture that is made for adhering beads to an object.  This technique was developed and used by the Huichol Indians of Mexico.  The bowls and other items that were made were religious offerings to the gods.

The Huichol (Wee-col) make beaded jaguars, snakes, turtles, boxes, masks and birds.  They make these by adhering/gluing beads to hand-carved wooden forms with the beads wax.

  1. Melt beads wax in a double boiler. You may start the melting process in the microwave. Be sure not to heat the wax all at once. Heat about 15 seconds at a time in the microwave, then maintain the melted wax in the double boiler. It takes quite a while in the double boiler.

  2. Use an artists paint brush to spread the wax as evenly as possible over the object. Use only a thin coat of the wax. Let the wax/object cool completely. Decide what kind of design you will make. The Huichol do not draw the designs before they place the beads. If you are careful you can draw your design and then start with the beads. Otherwise start in the center of your piece and work to the outer edges. You need to cover the entire waxed surface.
Once the design is finished, let the piece dry. Any wax you feel will be tacky, but over time the wax will dry.

  3. Never store the items in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
