A wooden bead hangs according to its density and its drilled hole, not its diameter. Dense wood (boxwood, lignum vitae, dense oak) sinks into a strand and pulls the line down at that point; light wood (balsa, basswood, paulownia) rides high and lets the strand float over it. The same shape in two woods reads as two different beads once strung.
If you have ever watched a plug builder tune a wooden body for balance, you already know the logic: mass placement decides behavior. The same principle shows up in tuning wooden surf lures, where density, added weight, and finish are adjusted until the piece sits right in moving water. A bead on a strand is a smaller version of the same problem.
How does wood density change the way a wooden bead hangs?
Density sets two things at once: how much the bead weighs for its size, and where the strand's center of gravity sits when the bead is in place. A 12 mm bead in boxwood can weigh three to four times what the same 12 mm bead weighs in basswood. On a short strand that difference is invisible. On a long strand, or on a strand meant to drape, it decides everything.
Three practical effects:
- Drop. Dense beads pull the strand into a curve at each bead. Light beads let the strand stay closer to a straight line.
- Swing. A dense bead has more momentum when the strand moves. On a necklace that swings with the body, dense beads settle slower and hit harder against neighbors.
- Wear at the hole. Heavier beads abrade the cord more at the drill hole. This is why dense beads on silk cord want a larger hole or a bead reamer pass before stringing.
A quick bench test: string five beads of the same size in two woods on the same cord, hold both ends, and let the strand hang. Photograph it against a plain wall. The photo tells you more than the scale does.
When does a wooden bead need added weight?
A bead needs added weight when the strand's behavior is wrong and density alone cannot fix it. Three cases come up often:
- The bead floats where it should sit. A light bead on a strand meant to drape will ride up over its neighbors. Adding weight inside the bead, not on the strand, keeps the look clean.
- The strand twists. If one heavy bead sits off-center in a repeating pattern, the strand rotates. Weighting a matching bead on the opposite side of the pattern cancels the twist.
- The bead is a focal and needs presence. A large light bead can feel hollow in the hand. A small brass tube or a few wraps of lead-free wire inside the hole gives it the weight the eye expects from its size.
How to add weight without ruining the bead:
- Drill the hole slightly oversize, then insert a short length of brass or copper tube. The tube also protects the cord.
- For a hidden weight, counter-drill from one end, drop in a small fishing sinker or a stack of brass washers, and cap with a plug of matching wood and wood glue.
- Never add weight by soaking the bead in oil or resin. It moves over months and stains the cord.
Weigh the bead before and after on a gram scale. A change of 0.3 to 0.8 g is usually enough to change how a bead hangs; more than that and you are building a different bead.
How do you test a finish before committing a strand?
Test the finish on a spare bead from the same batch, not on the strand. Wood varies from bead to bead, and a finish that behaves on one blank can raise grain or blush on the next.
A finish test that takes ten minutes:
- Turn or sand three spare beads from the same wood and the same drill run.
- Apply the finish exactly as you plan to on the strand: same number of coats, same dry time, same room temperature.
- Let them cure for the full time the label states, then handle them for a day. Put one in a pocket, rub one against a second bead, leave one on the bench.
- Check for tackiness, color shift, and wear at the hole. If the finish is still soft after the stated cure, it will stay soft on the strand.
What to watch for on wooden beads specifically:
- End grain at the hole. End grain drinks finish faster than face grain. A bead can look sealed on the outside and still be raw inside the hole.
- Raised grain. Water-based finishes raise grain on the first coat. Sand lightly between coats with 600 grit, or the bead will feel fuzzy on the cord.
- Color shift. Oil finishes darken wood more than the label suggests. Test on the actual species, not on a scrap of pine.
- Compatibility with the cord. Some oil finishes migrate into silk and cotton. Let the test bead sit against a length of your cord for a week before you commit.
If the test bead fails, change one variable at a time: finish type, number of coats, or cure time. Do not change all three.
What changes when the bead is worked in hand?
A turned bead is not finished when it leaves the lathe. Handling changes it. The oils on your hands, the friction of the cord, and the pressure of neighboring beads all work on the surface.
Expect these changes in the first month of wear:
- Burnishing. Handling polishes the high spots. A matte finish will slowly take on a sheen at the edges of the hole and along the equator of the bead.
- Settling at the hole. The cord compresses the wood at the drill hole. If the hole was drilled tight, the bead will seat and stop moving. If it was drilled loose, it will keep moving and enlarge the hole.
- Color drift. Oiled and waxed beads darken slightly with handling. Sealed beads do not.
If you want a bead to stay exactly as it left the bench, seal it fully and accept that it will feel less like wood in the hand. If you want it to age, finish it lightly and plan to re-wax once a year.
How do you match density to the strand you are building?
Match density to the job the strand has to do, not to the look of the bead on the bench.
- Drape strands. Use medium to dense woods. The strand should fall in a curve, not a line.
- Collar strands. Light woods work here because the strand sits on the body and does not need to hang.
- Swing strands. Use matched density across the pattern. Mixed density in a repeating pattern will twist.
- Focal strands. One dense bead at the center, lighter beads toward the ends. The strand will hang straight and the focal will sit where you put it.
A simple bench rule: if you cannot predict how the strand will hang from the density of the beads alone, add a test string before you commit the final cord. Ten minutes of testing saves an hour of restringing.
What to write down
Keep a bench card for each batch of turned beads. Record the species, the measured density if you have it (weight divided by volume, or just weight of a standard 10 mm blank), the drill size, the finish and number of coats, and the cure time. When a strand behaves well, the card tells you how to repeat it. When it misbehaves, the card tells you which variable to change.
The bead in your hand is the sum of the wood, the hole, the weight, and the finish. Change one and you change the strand.
